FAQ

What is the Urban Sketching Symposium?

The Urban Sketching Symposium is a three-day workshop at which artists from around the world meet to draw and learn together in the host city. It includes field sketching sessions, lectures, panels, exhibits and artists demos.

Symposium participants get one-on-one interaction with local and international workshop instructors coming to the host city from every corner of the world.

Barcelona is the host city of this year's event. Past Symposiums were held in Santo Domingo (2012), Lisbon (2011), and Portland, USA (2010).

The event is organized by Urban Sketchers, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising the artistic, educational and storytelling value of on-location drawing, promoting its practice and helping sketchers around the world connect with each other.

Professor Frank Ching leads a sketching workshop
during the 1st International Urban Sketching Symposium,
which took place in Portland, Ore. (USA) in 2010.

Who can participate?
The Symposium is open to anyone with an interest in drawing on location, no matter their skill level or professional background.

Is there a registration fee?
Yes. The registration fee for this year's Symposium in Barcelona is $395. We offer an "early-bird" special of $350 if you register before March 31st. After May 11, the registration price goes up to. See this page for more details. Registration opens March 25.

Why do you have to charge a registration fee?
While the Symposium is organized by a team of unpaid volunteers, we have to charge a fee in order to cover our expenses: space rental, travel and lodging of international instructors, teaching and speaking fees, some materials and those free drinks at the closing reception! We are also hoping that sponsors will help us cover our expenses. If the event yields a profit, it goes directly to the Urban Sketchers nonprofit to help with future educational programs and Symposiums.

How do I register?
Registration will open March 25. Visit this page for more details.

Is there a limit of participants?
We have a limit of approximately 150 participants for this year's Symposium in Barcelona.

Will the Barcelona Symposium be in English or Spanish?
Expect non-Spanish speaking instructors to conduct workshops in English. We will try to facilitate translation as much as possible.

No. Meals or lodging are not included.

Is there an official Symposium hotel that you recommend?
Participants are expected to make their own travel arrangements. For assistance, you may contact our Symposium volunteer travel agent, Idalina Vieitas, at idalina.vieitas@gmail.com
